About the New Communicators
The New Communicators is a series of events created by the public to share experiences and inspire discussion around the ways people communicate with each other using both online and offline media. It is for anyone interested in exploring new ways of creating conversations in our personal lives, within our communities or in business. It is a chance to share ideas, experiences and lessons learned.
Anyone can attend and anyone can organize an event. Whether you are an individual, a business, or an existing organization who already holds regular events, you can organize a New Communicators event. There is no formal submission or approval process. If you have an event idea, are willing to organize it and can find a venue to house it, you are welcome to post your event on the event schedule and be a part of the New Communicators series of events.
Would you like to participate? The series of events spans three days in September 2010: Wednesday the 15th, Thursday the 16th and Friday 17th. Why do it for three days and why those three days? That’s how we did it last year and worked out well. So, that’s how we’re going to do it this time.
Let’s be honest, this is not a traditional sort of conference. In fact, we wouldn’t even call it a conference at all. It’s not a “pay a fee, get a badge, listen to someone behind a podium, safety in numbers” kind of thing. It requires more effort on the part of the participants. There is a level of uncertainty for both attendees and organizers. Yeah, it’s kinda different, maybe even scary if you’ve never organized an event or spoken in public before. But if you like what we’re doing, now is your chance. You’re among friends, participate, enjoy and inspire.
Who the heck is doing this?
Erin Kurtz
“ I think of The New Communicators as a reaction to the guru-ism, podiums, pedestals, and membership fees associated with the methods and tactics of communication. So often I hear stories from people, organizations and companies outside of the marketing and communication industry who further their missions by utilizing communication technology in unique ways. My hope for the New Communicators is that it provides a forum for those people to share their stories with others who might directly benefit from the knowledge and experience by demystifying and heightening awareness of the incredible communication tools we have at our disposal. Inspiration can come from anywhere and I freely admit I want to be a part of this to learn from others.”

“For me, The New Communicators is a platform for helping a broad community come together and share how they are communicating with their peers, colleagues, clients, and the world at large. It’s truly by the people, for the people, and all about breaking down barriers. I see an increasing need and desire to build both online and in-person communities that provide opportunities for all kinds of communicators to tell their stories, learn from peers, and simply have a good conversation with like-minded folks. I know I don’t have all the answers, and want to turn to my local community for inspiration and education as we all figure out what it means to communicate in this digital age.”

“I believe the new mediums through which we communicate have unique implications on how our contact with each other is perceived and interpreted. I believe it is necessary to pioneer conversations that help shape the direction of both our digital societies and local communities. The strength of a community hinges on the strength of it’s ability to communicate internally. The root word ‘commune’ is the same in both words. It’s my hope that The New Communicators will foster more dialog around the subject as well as strengthen our ability to communicate in a complex environment.”
