The New Communicators is a three-day series of events exploring the ways we communicate with each other.

Events are created by anyone and anyone can attend. It is an open forum for discussion, education and inspiration.

This year, let's explore the concept of Reciprocity.

From digital anonymity to personal interactions and maybe make some new friends in the process. All you need is a Twitter ID, a laptop or tweet-capable phone, and an open mind. Here’s how it will go down.

1. Share a piece of yourself

Post a link to your Twitter account (or any other method you’d like to be contacted) as a response below and provide an interesting fact about yourself or something you’d like to talk about.

2. Take a Chance

Strike up a digital conversation with someone you find interesting from the responses below. If you’re using Twitter, add the hashtag #atparty to your conversation and allow others to join in.

3. Come on out at the Party

When you arrive at the event, broadcast that you have arrived and break on through to the other side. Make a personal connection with the person, or people, you met during your digital conversations.

The Format

The first 15 minutes of the event is NO TALKING ALLOWED. Raise your digital hand and confirm your new friends are in the room. It’s like a digital version of Marco Polo…except no swimming pool.

Upon arriving at the event, anyone who has not made a connection online is welcome to write their Twitter ID (or preferred connection channel) and something about themselves on a card, which will be posted on the wall for anyone looking to say hi.

After the 15 minutes is up, everyone is encouraged to talk openly with those you’ve connected with online. No more web anonymity, just good ol’ fashioned conversation.

Note

There will be 8 laptop stations available on a first-come-first-served basis. Those unfamiliar with Twitter can show up early for a brief tutorial.

RSVP

Let us know if you plan to attend.

    Hi,

I’ve been meaning to get to an AIP event for a while and it looks like this might be the one.

I am a partner in a local interactive design and development firm named Periscopic, and our Twitter page is Twitter.com/periscopic

On a personal note, I like photographyand writing.

  2. Posted by Allyson Dutko

I’m a student at AIPD and just started learning web design last January – not terribly web savvy but I have been trying to learn as quickly as possible; it feels like I’m treading water but so far it’s been fun!

What I’d like to talk about:

*I have a “vintage” cell phone with no internet capability – I have t-mobile service and currently use a PC laptop – tell me what new phone/device I should get and why!

*I am currently the Media Manager of the Web Design and Interactive Media department. I work for Dan Chapman and am responsible for connecting web students through social media outlets – I would love to get some advice on how to better accomplish this goal

    About me:

I am currently spray painting a florescent black-light sensitive beer pong table in my garage and it is stinking up my house – digital design is fun but also like being crafty and getting my hands dirty with quirky home projects

That’s all, see you at the party!

  10. Posted by erin

Hello, my name is Erin (http://twitter.com/ErinKurtz) and I plan to attend the Coming@Party. Although, I’m trying to hit every event on Thursday so I might be there late or for only a short time.

Regardless, hit me up for chatting and an eventual hand-shake if you like to talk about:

    - Interactive theory and design for web-based experiences

    - Web site deployment strategies for small agencies

    - The desperately important role of copywriting in interactive design and development

    - Metal. The music, not the material.

    - First-time home ownership.

Catch you on the flip flop.

    1) How technology is both beneficial and detrimental to how we socialize and cope

    2) Web development trends

    3) Stupid jokes and puns. Here’s one to get started. A men’s clothing store called Suit Yourself!

Looking forward to meeting some new digi-friends and sharing ideas :)
