Examples of New Communicators
In a previous post, Megan commented about persona development in regards to testing out a more clarified New Communicators message. This is illuminated the need to clarify who is a New Communicator. I know there has been confusion about whether we are the New Communicators or are you the New Communicators. I’m hoping to shed some light on that that now.
Below are just three examples of people and groups I consider to be New Communicators. These are just some people that I would like to hear talk about how they do their thing, their successes and failures, their trials and tribulations.
Example 1: Shelagh Johnson, Cascade AIDS Project
If you attended to the Q & A session, you were treated to a talk from my friend Shelagh Johnson of the Cascade AIDS Project. She spoke about the methods and tools she uses to reach teens and engage them with the ideas of safe sex, among other messages. Shelagh is a New Communicator. Her story is a good example of someone using multiple channels to reach an audience.

Example 2: BikeHugger
I find this group curious and interesting. They love bikes and they use many tools to extend their brand. They write about bikes. They tweet about bikes. They take pictures of bikes. The make videos about bikes. They organize mobile socials to be…social…and to spread their brand too I would think. Nothing wrong with that. I’m assuming they get paid to do this. I’d love to hear how their model works, but I’m sure that’s a secret sauce. I’m sure I’m just scratching the surface of what they do. I just find it inspiring to see people turning what they love into a living and succeeding. I love it. I think it’s great and I want to know more about it.
Example 3: Whiffies Fried Pies
One of the many Portland food cart success stories, Wiffies has a unique product, good price, good location and a climate surrounding it. They use twitter to connect with their audience, share menu updates etc. I don’t know them personally, but it feels authentic. It doesn’t feel like some business plan set in motion, it comes across as just doing their thing and doing what feels right. I think that’s also what makes a New Communicator, being open to your audience, but at the end of the day doing what feels right and succeeding.
Now, it could be said that these are all “success stories” and, with the exception of Shelagh, more about business than community outreach, art etc. However, these are just examples from my experiences, off the top of my head. Please, feel free to share your own examples below.
